The mobile app: adoption is the feature

The best-specified field service platform in the world fails if technicians do not open it. Everything else on the evaluation list is downstream of that.

The only metric that matters in month four

Whether technicians use it without being chased. A platform used properly by an unenthusiastic crew beats a better platform used badly, every time.

Which means the mobile app is not a subordinate feature of the purchase. For a service-call shop it is arguably the purchase.

What predicts adoption

Offline behaviour. Basements, plant rooms, rural routes. What happens to a job written with no signal — does it queue and sync, or is it lost?

Number of taps to close a job. Count them. Then count them for a job with photos, parts and a signature.

Photo handling. Trade work is documented in photos. If attaching six of them is slow, they will not be attached.

Battery. An app that flattens a phone by two in the afternoon gets closed at noon.

Login friction. Anything that logs a technician out daily will be resented daily.

How to test it properly

Not on your own phone in the office. Give it to your least software-tolerant technician for the whole trial period and ask them at the end, in private, whether they would keep it.

Housecall Pro publishes a 14-day free trial with no credit card required, which is enough time to do exactly this if it starts on day one rather than day nine.

This site has not put any of these apps in a van. The criteria above come from the structure of the work, not from a test, and are offered as a checklist rather than a verdict.
