Plumbing estimating fit finder: which kind of software your work needs

Five questions about how your work is shaped, and one of three answers — with the weighting shown, so you can argue with the reasoning rather than the verdict. It recommends no product and invents no price.

  • Published a price read from the vendor’s own page, with the date it was read
  • Quote-gated the vendor publishes no price. No number is shown and none is estimated
  • Unknown not established at source, and not guessed
Cover graphic: the three verdicts the fit finder can return - service, construction, or both - each with the one-line reason that produces it.

Five questions about how your work is shaped, and one of three answers: flat-rate service pricing, construction takeoff, or both. It shows which answers drove the result, so you can argue with the reasoning instead of just the verdict.

It does not recommend a product and it does not invent a price. The table below carries only what each vendor publishes on its own page. Two of the six publish nothing, and that is shown as quote-gated with no figure attached.

1 Where does the price come from?

The strongest single signal. Everything else is a tiebreak.

2 How long is a typical job?

A platform that assumes the invoice follows the visit will fight you on multi-week work.

3 Who produces the number?

Software written for a technician assumes a phone. Software written for an estimator assumes a desk.

4 Do you bid against other contractors on the same drawings?

If yes, takeoff speed and completeness is the competitive position itself.

5 Do you take deposits and bill in stages?

Progress billing and retainage are construction-accounting features, not missing service features.

A row marked quote-gated carries no number because the vendor publishes none. Figures reported by third-party comparison sites are unverified and are not printed here.

Compare a quote you were given

Two of the products above will only tell you a price on a call. Type what you were quoted and it is put on the same 36-month footing as the published ones. Everything in this table is your input. Nothing is seeded, and a blank stays blank rather than counting as zero.

What you were quotedOne-offPer monthPer year36 months

Total = one-off + (per month × 36) + (per year × 3). The formula is printed because a total whose arithmetic is hidden is not checkable.

How this decides, and what it refuses to decide

Each question carries a declared weight: where the price comes from counts 3, job length, who prices and competitive bidding count 2 each, and progress billing counts 1. An answer of “both” adds half its weight to each side. The result is the side with more weight, unless the two are within 25% of each other, in which case the answer is both rather than a coin toss.

Three limits, stated rather than discovered. With fewer than three questions answered it returns NOT_ENOUGH_ANSWERS and no verdict — an incomplete questionnaire producing a confident answer is the failure this site exists to avoid. The weights are a stated editorial judgement, not a fitted model, and they are printed above so you can disagree with them. And it never ranks products inside a category, because ranking software by how well it works would require having operated it, and this site has not.
